The Machinist would probably have to be one of the creepiest and psychologically complex movies of the year. The film is also a standout because of Christian Bale’s withering, and soul-destroying performance as a man wracked by insomnia, and tortured by guilt. Great has been made of Bale’s dramatic weight loss and his astounding transformation into the main character – he purportedly wanted to undergo a complete physical and mental metamorphosis – but nothing will prepare the viewer for the reality of Christian’s starving, skeletal-like body. Bale is nothing short of unbelievable in this movie – he’s an actor of amazing capacities; and it’s not honest the feat of his physical transformation, but the fact that he totally inhabits and becomes so totally immersed in his character.

The Machinist is curious and difficult. I have to say that “The Machinist” is easily the most unsettling, disturbing and bizarre film I have seen so far this year. I mean, you can sigh from reading the wait on of the DVD hide and seeing how disturbingly thin Christian Bale in pictures from the movie that this is not going to be a very overjoyed time. Yet, last night I was in the mood for something shaded and uncompromising. I got it and then some with this cleverly haunting film that is unforgettable.

Bale plays “Trevor Reznik,” a stupefied and fatigued machinist who hasn’t slept for a year. He lives his life in isolation, with the few minor exceptions such as a capable prostitute who takes a liking to him and an airport coffee shop waitress he visits every night. Things consume a turn for the worst when he meets a fellow machinist for the first time… but nobody knows who this guy is. They jabber Trevor that he doesn’t exist. The paranoia and confusion leads to a horrific accident on the job that involves his co-worker. And that’s when he gets the peculiar notes in his apartment. Either Trevor is completely delusional and has lost his mind… or somebody really is out to pick up him.

What’s really though-provoking about the movie is that unbiased like Trevor, we do not know exactly what is accurate or what is made up. There are times when we’re doubtful of what we’re seeing, and then we salvage roped in and second-guess ourselves. The movie is a non-stop alarm fest that impartial speaks of loneliness and paranoia, and that’s why it works. It looks and feels exactly like it should. From the very first few minutes, it’s easy to realize that this is going to be one unsettling and dim experience. It is one that you may want to re-watch after you gape it all. You’ll definitely contemplate about it for a while after it’s all said and done, but personally I didn’t assume it was that hard to section together after it was over. It made sense, and it made even more sense on the second viewing. Christian Bale is fabulous in this. I can’t acquire he dropped down to around 100 pounds for the role. Seems like there’s too many “cutesy-wutesy” movies for the family, so it’s satisfactory to gape something so brutal, so raw and so in your face like this. Exciting action scenes, titanic special effects, witty dialogue, angst-filled romance. Ignore naysayers who say the dialogue is dreadful, (I would like to know what is so poor about it. It is an adventure movie and yet the dialogue is almost corn-free, yet many pretentious “acting” movies are chubby of corn), or the acting is poor. Hayden Christensen is convincing showing his angst and sometimes being a petulant brat, (he does play a teenager, yet critics seem to have a scrape with him actually playing his fraction) setting up his path to the darkside. The mentor-student, father-son relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin is well done, shown in the movie with the fleet and sometimes witty Star Wars dialogue I admire.

If it seems I am attacking the critics it is because I do peruse a lot of pandering to snobbishness in many of their reviews, instead of an just assessment of the movie. Also, too grand nostalgic feelings from die-hard novel Star Wars trilogy fans gets in the diagram of some of the reviews. Many of these reviewers are TOO stuck on their nostagia, and review by constantly comparing them to the archaic movies (a very high-standard indeed!), and whether they fulfill their nostagia, instead of unbiased taking in the fresh movies as they are. If they unprejudiced don’t care for the movie, ravishing, but there is too grand going into many reviews that have nothing to actually do with the quality of the movie itself.

In any case, fair try the movie if you haven’t seen it already. Ignore the snobs and the overly nostalgic. Have fun and be wowed, and view the original movie Revenge of the Sith in theaters, another 6 out of 5 star movie!

Ok, first of all, I would like to say that all of the people out there who went to this movie expecting it to be exactly on the same level as the older trilogy, and left feeling disappointed by the chronicle, or the characters, or anything else. You can’t demand it to be the same at all. The first trilogy was spot during a civil war, during a shadowy time. The characters were varied. You had a rogue, a princess, a wookiee co-pilot, an frail war hero jedi, and a young antagonist with hidden potential, who all came together to defeat a current enemy. Now, flash aid a few decades. It is a still time, but with a stirring in the air, of a coming change. The government is becoming extinct and scandalous, and the Jedi are losing their mystique and grandeur, because they are attached to the extinct government. So, you can query a few things. Dense political plotlines, rotten individuals, Jedi who aren’t in touch with their powers anymore, and a more faded school soceity. You must understand this. Han Solo would never blend in an environment such as this, he wouldn’t match. The characters in this movie were ample in my thought, because they fit the times that they were spot in. Obi-Wan (Ewan) was noteworthy more fleshed out, and you could snarl that he was horrified for Anakin, and his dread would lead to failure in his training of Anakin. Anakin ( Hayden) also came to fleshy veiw. No longer the child who screamed “wizard!”, He had near into the light as a petrified young man who would become The Darth Vader we all know. And Yoda, I know there are a few people out there who said that yoda’s fight was sacrilige, I disagree. Yoda has trained for hundreds of years, His skills would contemplate that. And add the fact that he wasn’t at the destroy of his life like he is later. Padme was the same, but for expedient reason. Mace had more mask time, and Dooku was a estimable addition to the anecdote, it’s advantageous to hear some smack talking in a fight. I miss that. The movie exceeded my expectations in many ways. I now have to wait a couple more years to behold the empire rise to power and the climactic lightsaber battle that is inevitable, but I can construct it now, thanks to the second chapter not sucking. Now I can see a newer Star Wars DVD without wincing, the years will pass more easily that blueprint.

The modern Double-DVD of Mario Bava’s gargantuan LISA AND THE DEVIL and it’s re-edited abomination version HOUSE OF EXORCISM is a must for euro-horror fans. Bava’s modern version of LISA is one of the best lyrical euro-horror films ever. The presentation here looks objective like the obsolete ELITE laserdisc which also suffered from some tiny digital artifacting…nothing terrible, but it isn’t perfect. Everything about this go is great- the music, the style, unprejudiced the general feel of it…it’s also completely unconventional. Of course, than there’s the re-edited HOUSE OF EXORCISM version which added modern “exorcist” type scenes and rearranged the film to originate it accessible to audiences in the mid-70’s. It’s unpleasant, of course, but it’s big to have both versions together to peer exactly how the film was damaged by the re-edit….this DVD in a plan is the euro-trash fan’s version of the Criterion “Brazil” DVD! As far as extras go, the DVD unfortunately does not have 2 alternate scenes that were on the ELITE LD – one being an alternate extra gory scene of Silva Koscina’s death and the other an alternate erotic scene between Elke and Orano. The DVD does fill the extra ‘unfinished’ softcore sex scene, though, so why the other 2 scenes were left off is peculiar and disappointing. Other extras include the uncompleted L&TD trailer (also on the LD) plus 2 trailers for HOE. There’s a very minimal “photo/poster gallery” (lasts 23 seconds! ) and some minimal filmos and bios. The HOUSE OF EXORCISM has an audio track featuring Elke and producer Leone who explains how he butchered the film (although he doesn’t word it that intention!) . All in all, it’s a Stout DVD from IMAGE – don’t pass this one up!

In the liner notes of Lisa And The Devil/The House Of Exorcism Alfredo Leone ask Mario Bava that if Mario had carte blanche (a blank check), what movie would he create? His respond was this movie, Lisa And The Devil, which is Bava’s most personal film.

Lisa (Elke Sommer) is a foreigner in a tourist group (it’s never explained what country she’s from, or what country they’re visiting) . While admiring a fresco of the devil (which looks amazingly like Telly Savalas), she hears music and is drawn to it, abandoning the tourist group in the process. This leads her to a man(Telly Savalas) carrying a life-sized dummy. Lisa recognizes him as the devil from the painting and from this moment on the viewer is taken for a nightmarish streak that’s hard to bellow which is actually sincere or a hallucination. Not that the demolish result is a mess, far from it; it is worthy how Bava holds such a non-linear location together so well where other filmakers before and since failed and it’s easy to peer why this is Bava’s current film. The cast ensemble is marvelous and so is the direction. It’s definitely one of his best.

Unfortunately Leone couldn’t net a distributor for this film. Seeing the success of The Exorcist, Leone had Bava reshoot some scenes that had Lisa “posessed” (spouting profanities, spewing pea soup, and so on) . Bava balked at filming material he felt was blasphemous, so he walked and Leone finished filming the scenes, edited them into Lisa And The Devil, and called it The House Of Exorcism. The slay result is really pathetic and an insult to Mario Bava’s movie. There is an audio commentary with Leone and Elke Sommer which is delicious and provides some of the information in making Lisa And The Devil but mostly tries to interpret the filming of The House Of Exorcism. In my idea he fails.

The DVD special features include beside the commentary, a Mario Bava biography, Bava’s and the cast filmographies, a theatrical trailer for Lisa and the Devil, two theatrical trailers for House Of Exorcism (whoopee), a deleted softcore sex scene between Silva Koscina and Gabriele Tinti, a photo and poster gallery, and liner notes by Bava scholar Tim Lucas. Too abominable there wasn’t an audio commentary by Tim Lucas on Lisa And The Devil; his knowledge is extraordinary and he’s always attractive to listen to.

As awful as House Of Exocism is, I unexcited recommend getting this DVD not only for comparison’s sake but for the Leone/Sommer commentary. Otherwise, salvage the Lisa And The Devil DVD which is available seperately.

Against the information provided here by Amazon, the DVD packaging and on-screen info give the rating of this film as PG (not R) . There is some brief nudity and some level-headed swearing. Maltin’s movie guide indicates the film was originally released with an R rating, but was subsequently edited to the 125 min. PG rated version featured here. The disc is widescreen anamorphic as well, not fat veil as famous by Amazon (the packaging also only notes “widescreen”.)

This is one of the best movies on organized crime available. It is along the lines of “Goodfellas” and “Donnie Brasco” although it takes residence at a noteworthy earlier time in history. It is gritty and apt although artistic license is expected. The movie focuses on Joe Valachi who was the first of the Mafia informants and area the stage for others to follow. The movie gives explicit and true information on the history of the American Mafia from the new “bosses” through the making of the syndicate on through the Vito Genovese regime. It is a must sight for anyone alive to in the history of organized crime from its very beginning on to the beginning of their decline.

Nice packaging. Comes in a budge case with nice artwork of all the characters and the now accepted viridian collection price on the front, assist and side. Inside is two thin cd cases with 2 cd’s in each. (again nice artwork on both cases with that steel faulty looking symbol on the assist of both. Each cd has red and gold symbolic artwork on it with roman numerals 1-4 (1 for each cd) .

**Complaint** there is no extras on the first 3 cd’s. A snappy trailer (of one anime or another) will play prior to the main menu cover, but only disc 4 has any extra features, and all it has is the textless opening and ending (which is not really textless because you can’t turn of the subs that explain) and a list of trailers. There are no commentaries or late the scenes.

The 3 stars is for the anime itself. This is a personal thought and you should peek the anime yourself because you may consider it deserves a better rating. I unprejudiced honestly mediate there was too remarkable terrified screaming on Ester’s piece and the bit about **SPOILER** Father Abel saying he promised not to waste anymore? Are you kidding me!? I remember more than once him swinging that demon scythe thing and wiping out plenty of enemies.

But all in all I didn’t like it, but don’t let that terminate you from buying it, if you like the anime it’s a substantial label, and I cherish the overall theme, I unbiased mediate the execution could have been better.

This anime is based off vampires and humans in a semi-peaceful existence, where the world has been ravaged by WMD’s. However, war may smash out at any moment. Abel is the main character. It is a spin-off of Cain and Abel from the Bible. Abel is…special, that’s all I will say. He acts like the clutsy hero, who has a sad past, as well as a sad side. In short what is Anderson trying to say? A lot. And it is all an alegory about the human life. Trapped in convention, in relations, like being stuck in the traffic, working hard and as the hero says “try to do some food on the table, and appreciate oneself”. It is also a criticism of the establishment and power. When people trust their lives in authority that is supposed to buy care of them, like trusting that the magician will not prick you in half but will gain the trick work, but things go nasty. Like when a mental patient is wearing the doctor’s robe and nobody understands the contrast.

The imagery of the film is sparkling to say the least, the photography, the colors, the camera that never moves, the ever lasting deep focus that captures foreground and background and does not miss anything. Oh, this is a masterpiece. It reminded me of Tarkofski, although lighter and more approachable, and also Angelopoulos, although not so wearisome.

I would recomend this film to everyone. I first saw this film IIRC in 2001 at the Roger Ebert Overlooked Film Festival (“Ebertfest”) in Champaign-Urbana. I instantly fell in esteem with the film — it was clearly the best film at the festival. And then I waited for DVD release… and waited… and waited. Finally I received my copy, some 4+ years after the film was released.

Upon watching it again, I felt it lost something compared to the presentation on the massive cover and fervent 800+ audience at the Virginia Theatre. The visuals are intentionally drab, but incredibly rich and detailed; hence, the tiny veil is not kind. Also, like noteworthy absurdist art, it is difficult to recapture the emotional shock and wonderment of the first viewing. But yet the movie is unexcited compelling on DVD.

This Swedish comedy is shadowy, brooding, irreverent and often times disturbing. From the grey skies to the traffic-jammed streets to the predominantly obese and ashen-faced cast, this movie makes no attempt to be be gorgeous or cheery. However, distinct scenes of despair are so elephantine of beauty, one smiles despite oneself. I am reminded of obvious scenes from the work of Terry Gilliam.

The status is rather simple: things are not going well in this fictional Scandinavian city and the citizens are getting desperate. Don’t ask why or where — it’s truly unimportant. Woven into this fabric is Caesar Vallejo’s poem “Beloved be the man who sits down,” the verses of which originate a a type of novel beatitudes extolling the merits of the mundane individual. In the movie, the poem is written by the protaganist’s son, who now resides in a mental hospital. Ironically, the people in the patients in the mental hospital appear to be the only sane residents in a city gone loopy as capitalism, government and religion fail its increasingly desperate and selfish citizens.

First of all, it isn’t even a 2-disc status!

Most of the obsolete “60th Anniversary Edition” bonus features are assign on this DVD taking out some of the making, Dumbo II preview, and a music video. I do not understand Disnet AT ALL!

The unique transfer IMO is WORSE then the “60th Anniversary Edition” It has no life to it, it is darker and very listless. Also you are losing 30% of the film do to an overscan! This movie was already filmed in fullscreen why do a pan and scan job to a fullscreen DVD? Arrive on Disney, you gain enough money!

Both my children have frequently watched this DVD (which first came out (without extras) in Europe in 1999) since they were one and both bask in it imensely.

I’m both astonished and shy that anyone could think this movie noxious for children but can only engage they approach from the same group of people who banned Robin Hood books from schools for being ‘pro communist’ and Shakespeare for being ‘too explicit’!

The ‘drunken scene’ is amusing, brief and discrete (all you glimpse is the shadows of characters through canvas) . As to fleet forwarding through the dream sequence for the kids’ befriend because it is ‘too long’ that is verging on irresponsible. All doing so teaches a child is that it’s OK to have a short attention span and to zoom through films to the ‘interesting bits’. Perhaps I was rotten though and the accurate of the narrative has been hidden too deeply “Persevere – Don’t Give Up” is lost on some people.

Finally–the enormous Errol Flynn is becoming available on DVD. One can only hope that Warner Bros. will be releasing more classic Flynn titles in the come future. Except for tedious in his career, when Errol’s excessive lifestyle took its toll, we are looking at one of the most consuming stars to ever grace the “silver shroud”.

As other reviews will impart you, this is a truly memorable World War II drama about American soldiers successfully accomplishing a unsafe mission against the Japanese in the jungles of Burma, only to face the daunting task of returning to home scandalous alive. The film is spicy, touching, black and uplifting–and if ever there was an actor that men might follow even through the gates of hell, it is Errol Flynn. I agree that this is one of his best performances. At first, we come by the eminent Flynn bravado, but as the chronicle progresses, we seek more desperate human qualities and ultimately a world-weary resignation. The scene where he discovers that one of his men has been tortured to death does not really exhibit the victim–it doesn’t have to–the alarm and disbelief on Flynn’s face says it all.

The film is long–but even when there is no action taking situation, the combination of suspense and sharply-drawn characters keeps a firm grip on your attention. You can feel that oppressive heat–the dense jungle–the biting insects–and the constant threat of a ruthless enemy. In many ways the atmosphere foreshadows another execrable war for Americans, in another Asian jungle, some twenty years later.

The DVD is excellent–the record is very definite and stable for a 58-year frail film.

I know that this movie was vilified in the UK for ignoring the spacious role played by British troops in this theatre of the war. I don’t pass historical judgments–I simply review the film. As such, “Just Burma” is a mighty statement, and an worthy vehicle for a truly tremendous star.

Raoul Walsh directed this gruelling, gritty, compelling war tale, produced during World War Two, as the fight in the Pacific was level-headed in beefy swing. Errol Flynn, in one of his least glamorous roles, stars as a hard-bitten Captain in charge of an American paratrooper unit that gets sent on a commando mission into Japanese-occupied Burma. They easily attain their goal of destroying a strategic radar post, but are decimated while trying to return from enemy territory. The film is remorselessly well paced, tense, and manages to transcend the conventions of Hollywood’s WWII combat melodramas: it is propagandistic and uses sure formulas, but it is also earthy and anxiety-provoking in a draw that the grade-B war films of the era were not. The plight of the soldiers — stranded unhurried enemy lines and slit off from their benefit — is made visceral in a device which few movies manage to state, making this film a positive precursor to “Platoon” and “Gloomy Hawk Down.” It’s bleak tone and realistic portrayal of the foot soldiers, with their sad humor and fatalistic settle, all rings accurate. Highly recommended.

Freddy is a typical early 1980s punk rock fan who, on his first day at work at UNEEDA Medical Supply, learns that the movie “Night of the Living Dumb” was based on an steady event though-provoking zombies and that UNEEDA one day came into possession of one of the zombies which is now being held in a cylinder in the basement. A non-believing Freddy is shown the container honest as it explodes, filling the supply company’s building with a toxic green gas. The gas causes the sole human body in the body to approach to life (as well as freeing the zombie from it’s cylinder prison) and after failing to demolish the zombie the tradition map (cutting of it’s head) they assume it to the local crematorium to be cremated. Unfortunately this makes things Worthy, Noteworthy worse as the smoke laced with the toxic chemical mixes with storm clouds that rain down on the city at night and resurrecting the bodies buried inside the town’s cemetary where ironically Freddy’s fellow punk-friends are having a limited party.

The kicker for Return of the Living Dreary that makes it a classic film and makes it one of the most well loved zombie movies is the fact that the film’s zombies aren’t your typical movie zombie. They are luminous (luring police to the crematorium after killing off several cops who near to investigate all of the peculiar activity going on), are snappily and agressive instead of plain and uninteresting and the zombies have the most hilarious banter gripping their thirst for brains that can have even the most squeemish movie viewer laughing.
